We’ve posted previously about the great new online service from Zillow.com that allows you to get get a quick (and free) estimate of your home’s market value.

The Wall Street Journal (7/13/06), ran a comparison of several online home appraisal services: Zillow.com, Realestateabc.com, HouseValues.com, and Instanthomevaluations.com.

Of the services, two - Zillow.com and Realestateabc.com - are both free and don’t require you to submit personal information (like name and address) to use the service.

Upshot: The Journal didn’t specifiy a clear “winner” but from our reading of the article, it appears that Zillow.com has the best mix of features, cost, and hassle-free use. The paid services didn’t offer any obvious advantages over free services nor were their sample home value estimates more precise or accurate than the free services (when compared to the values arrrived at by an on-site appraiser).

If you’re in the market for a HELOC and want an independent assessment of your home’s value, why not check out both Zillow.com and Realestateabc.com.
